After graduation, some students decide to take a break and relax. Others, however, jump right in to get a head-start on their college careers!
Kotis Atkinson, a 2019 Topeka High School graduate, enrolled in the Kansas State University Multicultural Academic Program Success (MAPS). MAPS is a six-week program that is designed to prepare recent graduates for the rigorous academic expectations of a university environment. Program participants like Atkinson were provided with the opportunity to get to know K-State's campus and its services.
Participants also went on tours and met faculty and industry professionals who are available to serve as mentors to the participants as they go through their college careers.
The mission of the MAPS program is to challenge and support students as they make the transition to college with the ultimate goal of student success at Kansas State University. As a bonus, Atkinson received 5 hours of college credit for participating in the program!
Another recent Topeka High School graduate, Lynn Rizo, had the opportunity to attend the Ichabod Success Institute at Washburn University over the summer. This 5-week program is designed to prepare first-time direct-from-high-school students for their transition into college.
The program continues over the next two years of the students' college careers and consists of coursework, activities and services to ensure collegiate success. The Institute seeks to recruit students from under-represented groups and guide them through the transition into their university career.
By attending the Ichabod Success Institute this summer, Rizo received 6 hours of college credit!
It's amazing to see graduates taking their futures into their own hands and working towards continued success! Good luck to both Kotis Atkinson and Lynn Rizo on their academic careers to come!
