History and Progress

Dear Topeka Public Schools Family,

Happy month of May! As we enter the month in which we celebrate the Brown v. Board decision ending legal segregation, we have highlighted the many events in the community and we encourage you to attend at least one event. It is such an honor as the first black female superintendent to be part of this historical moment and to learn about the history and ongoing progress. While there are many things still being tackled, it’s so important to reflect on the progress that has occurred across the nation that started with Topeka leading the way.

Pictured above are visitors from China at McClure today who are studying our innovative strategies and curriculum. The unique partnership with our visitors from China is one of many examples of the diverse partnerships within our schools. McClure is a Kansas and National School of Character. To learn more about the recent events and awards across the district, we encourage you to read the articles in this newsletter and follow us on social media.

Yesterday, I had the privilege to speak at the CASA volunteer appreciation event. Our volunteers through various agencies contribute towards the continued excellence in Topeka Public Schools. We especially want to extend a big thank you to the volunteers from ShareFest last Saturday. As we end the school year, we welcome the community to volunteer at the many events occurring. Thank you for helping us have an amazing school year.
