Happy First Day of School! 🎒 🙌🏼 📚

The district was full of smiles and anticipation this morning as students began the first day of school of the 2019-2020 year.

Staff gathered this morning to greet students as they entered school, sharing high-fives and words of encouragement. Many schools decorated their entranceways, showing families how excited they were to have their students return. Dr. Anderson, Superintendent of Topeka Public Schools, is serving as a crossing guard this week at various schools to show her encouragement and support for students and their families as the year gets underway. Her first stop this morning was at McCarter Elementary, where she greeted young scholars and wished them a happy first day!

Kathy Cooney, principal at McCarter Elementary, said "This is always my favorite day of the year because we are reminded why we chose to be educators. It is great to have our students back in school, in class, and learning something new every day!"

It wasn't just staff greeting students as they arrived to school this morning! Community members joined in the excitement and helped welcome students back at schools across the district.

Lowman Hill Elementary principal, Melissa Wells-Martin said, "Our partners at Topeka Bible Church, the Coast Guard, the Public Library, Staff, Family and Friends and even Dr. Mike Morrison and Mr. Dustin Dick joined in to cheer and smile and tell kids that we are glad they are here!"

The first day of school is known for being exciting and emotional. From the kindergartener nervously navigating their new school for the first time, to the confident sixth grader excitedly greeting their friends after a long summer, to the proud caregivers walking in with their students. The first day of school is so exciting because it marks the beginning of all the discoveries students will make throughout the next year. We are proud to have such amazing students, families and staff here at Topeka Public Schools, and know that the 2019-2020 school year will be one for the books. #WeAreTPS
